Where to Rent Right Now?

Finding a rental in this town can be one of the more existentially troubling experiences in life, somewhere between kindergarten placement and major surgery. As ever, supply is low and demand is incredibly high, sending the median asking rent for apartment searchers shooting up to a panic-inducing $4,225. We didn’t need Forbes to tell us that SF is the worst city for renters, but they did anyway. Even techies are starting to contemplate moving away—or just selling everything and moving into an Airstream.

A word of advice: Don’t stay on Craigslist till your eyes bleed. We’ve done some of the sifting for you and come up with a list of 23 buildings that frequently have apartments for rent. All are either brand new or often have availability simply based on the sheer number of units on the premises. These won’t be the very cheapest rentals around town; in fact, quite a few are luxury. Even for those that are purely market rate, prices tend to be higher than your typical Craigslist rental because big buildings usually mean amenities, which add up to a higher price premium. But if you’re the sort to take advantage of things like roof decks and on-site gyms and pools, the right situation may be just around the corner.
