People have been asking about the new Trader Joe’s/CVS that is slated to open in the former Cala Foods building at California and Hyde streets. There has been a lot of progress with the $3 million in renovations to the building, so here is an update. For starters, the original project planned for the site about four years ago was planned to be six to eight stories of about 100 condos atop ground-floor retail. That proposal got cut down real quick, and in 2011 developer Prado Group came back with new plans to renovate the surprisingly well-appreciated building to house Trader Joe’s and CVS, all while keeping the trademark swooping concrete roof designed in 1960 by Dudley Wynkoop. Construction started early this year, and the original construction goal was to reach completion by in the fall of 2012. They recently got building permits to add the tenant signs (Trader Joe’s and CVS) in September, but when we checked in with Trader Joe’s, there was no opening date scheduled yet. By comparison, some of their other stores have openings scheduled through the end of November. Looks like Fall 2012 will be here before we know it and the doors will not be open for business.
