Today the Planning Commission is voting on the application to turn the former Red Vic Theater on Haight Street into an expansion of the neighboring Alembic Bar. The project will expand the bar by 1,800 sq.ft., add a 49-seat event space in the rear (for movie screening, concerts, community meetings, and private parties), and a retail “market hall” filled with lots of small retail kiosks. The Red Vic closed down last year after 31 years of business. It’ll also rework the front of the building, basically cutting it in half for two entrances. There’s loads of support from neighbors and neighborhood organizations, including the Haight Ashbury Improvement Association and the local police. Planning staff is also totally on board, saying the mix of uses will keep the street activated both day and night.
