For those of you that drive. Critical Mass can be a nightmare! It’s Bikes vs Cars. This 20th anniversary ride is expected to be 10,000 bikers. Yerba Buena is normally part of the ride.
To be safe you may want to park your car by 6pm. Life in the big city!
This Friday, September 28, 2012 marks the 20th birthday of Critical Mass, the world’s biggest urban bike event. Beware if you are on downtown streets as this week’s ride is expected to draw a crowd of at least double the normal number.
Promptly at 6:00 p.m., an expected pack of up to 10,000 bicyclists will assemble at Justin Herman Plaza in downtown San Francisco opposite the Ferry Building. From there, they will take an as yet unknown route through the city. Weird attire and no attire are part of the monthly rides, so this one is sure to be a colorful swarm.
Critical Mass is a bicycling event typically held on the last Friday of every month in San Francisco. Since 1992, it has spread to over 300 cities around the world. San Francisco holds bragging rights as the ride was originally held here on the last Saturday of September in 1992 with the idea of drawing attention to how unfriendly the city was to bicyclists.
The leaderless structure of Critical Mass makes it impossible to assign it any one specific goal. In fact, the purpose of Critical Mass is simply a meeting up at a set location and time and traveling as a group through city or town streets. It’s a fun activity for cyclists, but often a nightmare for Friday night commuters.
